Leadership in advanced 5G&6G through our participation in UNICO-5G
Our participation in UNICO-5G projects will foster innovation, research and development in the technologies needed for advanced 5G and 6G. Our aim is to consolidate and increase our leadership in advanced 5G technologies and become a world-class reference for 6G development.
The main goal of our participation in UNICO-5G is to consolidate and increase our leadership in advanced 5G and 6G technologies and position ourselves at the forefront of connectivity technologies for new digital infrastructures. The UNICO-5G initiative requires that around two thirds of the research activities are carried out in collaboration with the Spanish industry. These collaborations will facilitate that our cooperation with large companies and SMEs become systematic and long-term. With these cooperations, we will thus promote innovation and entrepreneurship by linking our talent to the development and implementation of technologies that will enable the creation of new products and services around advanced 5G and 6G.
Our participation in the UNICO-5G initiative is through 9 coordinated technical projects, that cover key topics for advanced 5G and 6G technologies such as 3D networks, cell-free architectures, whiteboxes for the decoupling of HW and SW both at the Edge and for transport networks, end-to-end resource management for disaggregated networks, AI-powered zero-touch networks, 6G vertical services through O-RAN architectures, with a focus on robust, secure, and efficient vehicular services, and, finally, open and flexible 6G architectures for security based on quantum technologies.
The main expected outcomes of our participation in the UNICO-5G initiative revolve around three main axis
- Generation of new knowledge and technical expertise of our research staff in advanced 5G and 6G.
- Strengthen existing links and create new ones with the Spanish industry stakeholders (operators, equipment vendors, system integrators, SMEs).
- Facilitate our participation in the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) within the Horizon Europe framework program.
