Permapyrenees (EFA 063/01) is an Interreg POCTEFA project, with a duration of 3 years (01/01/2024 – 01/01/2027) and co-financed by the European Union, which focuses on the study of permafrost and will generate new indicators for monitoring climate change. This project will also serve to monitor and prevent risks associated with permafrost degradation (e.g., slope instability or rockfalls), which in recent years have affected highly frequented mountain routes and some infrastructure. To achieve this, a series of innovative monitoring techniques will be used along with deep drilling to detect the presence of permafrost and associated risks. Furthermore, the precise information generated by this project will be shared with land management authorities as well as with the general population interested in practicing and enjoying mountain activities with increased safety.
