The project intends to carry out a case study for the mobile network deployed by Orange in Senegal. In particular, the CTTC plans to analyse the mobile traffic datasets and the weather datasets provided within the D4D Challenge, and to correlate them with other data obtained from third parties on energy consumption of mobile networks and solar irradiation in Senegal. The objective is to estimate the energy consumption of the mobile network, evaluate the energy savings in terms of operational costs and CO2 emissions achievable with different BS sleep solutions, and estimate the size of photovoltaic panels and batteries to realize a renewable-energy powered mobile network that can achieve different levels of consumption of energy from the grid / injection of energy into the grid.
