Josep Mª Fabrega Sanchez obtained the BSc and MSc degrees in telecommunications engineering from Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC-BarcelonaTech) in 2002 and 2006, respective. In 2010, he obtained the PhD in signal theory and communications from UPC-BarcelonaTech, specializing in fiber-optic transmission systems.
During 2004-2010 he was R&D engineer in the optical communications group of UPC-BarcelonaTech, where he carried out the PhD. In 2010 he joined the optical networks and systems (ONS) department of CTTC as post-doctoral researcher. In November 2012 he was upgraded to become permanent researcher of the same department. In March 2017 he was promoted to a senior researcher position of the ONS department of CTTC.
Nowadays, he has more than 15 years of experience in optical subsystems R&D. His specialization is on optical transmission systems, not only from the design and modeling perspective, but also counting on an extensive laboratory experience. Therefore, he has contributed to and demonstrated new modulation formats, subsystems and transceiver concepts specifically designed for different applications and network segments, including core, aggregation and access.
Participation in projects and industrial grants
Since 2005 he has actively participated in over 21 R&D projects funded by the European Commission’s Framework Programmes (H2020, FP7, FP6) and the Spanish National research programmes (Proyecto I+D, Red Temática, CENIT, CYCIT). Additionally, he has been the CTTC researcher in charge of two public projects (H2020 INT5GENT and Red Temática PIC4TB).
He also has participated in 6 different projects for technology valuation and transfer to the industry, leading those 4 with CERCA institution (Barcelona, ES), ECrowd! (Barcelona, ES), KDDI R&D (Saitama, JP), and AST&Science (Miami, USA).
Training activities
(Co-)directed 3 PhD theses (1 ongoing) and 14 BSc/MSc theses, all of them dealing with different aspects of fiber optic communication transmission systems.
Author of 4 different didactic materials for subjects related to optical communication systems and networks, in the framework of different Master degrees.
Delivery of specialized talks in technical schools, workshops and events related to projects (e.g. H2020 ONFIRE, Red Temática PIC4TB).
Dissemination and outreach
Author of 53 publications and coauthor of another 124 publications, including international journals (36, 19 of them in Q1), conferences (130, 34 of them invited papers) and patent families (2), covering theoretical and practical aspects of transmission devices and systems for fiber optic communications.
Delivery of talks related to photonics and optical networks in outreach activities such as the Catalan Science Week.
