On 22nd January 2025 at 11:00h the CTTC will host the seminar “How to Reduce Energy Consumption in Radio Acces Networks? Towards an information theory of energy-saving techniques in radio access networks“. In this seminar François Rottenberg will present:

Abstract

As of 2022, yearly data volume has gone up to more than 3 Zettabytes and the traffic continues to rise at a rate of about 25%/year. Energy efficiency has improved over the years but not fast enough, which results in an annual energy consumption growth of 2.5% for the ICT sector. It is becoming increasingly important to reduce energy consumption of wireless communication networks to reduce operational expenses and reach climate ambitions. This seminar will quantify and clarify by clear examples how drastic energy savings can be achieved, paving the way towards a new communication theory of energy-saving techniques in radio access networks.

Bio

François Rottenberg received the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Louvain-la-Neuve, in 2014, and the Ph.D. degree jointly from UCLouvain and Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Brussels, in 2018. From 2018 to 2019, he was a postdoctoral researcher with the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. From 2019 to 2021, he was a postdoctoral researcher with UCLouvain and ULB, funded by the Belgian National Science Foundation. He is now an assistant professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven). He has been a regular visitor and collaborator of the Centre Tecnològic Telecomunicacions Catalunya (CTTC), Spain and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan. He was secretary and is now the vice-chair of the IEEE Benelux Section. His main research interests are in signal processing and machine learning for sustainable communications techniques, including multi-antenna systems, novel modulation formats, positioning and physical-layer security.
