Next-generation mobile networks must overcome numerous challenges to achieve high scalability, flexibility, dynamicity, automation, and seamless cross-layer interworking. To address these demands, leading standardization bodies such as 3GPP and O-RAN advocate for virtualized architectures, distributed across multiple physical entities and interconnected via fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul links.
In this context, the 6G BLUR project, led by CTTC, brings together a consortium of key stakeholders from the 5G/6G value chain, including Telefónica, Ericsson, Keysight, SRS, and Universidad de Cantabria. Funded by the NextGenerationEU Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan of the Spanish Government, 6G BLUR is tackling these challenges head-on by demonstrating multiple industry-driven proofs of concept (PoCs), including (1) 6G disaggregated zero-touch mobile networks as a service in O-RAN architectures and non-public networks (NPNs); (2) Advanced network control mechanisms for optimizing fronthaul capacity, QoS management, and functional splits, along with digital twins for NPNs; and (3) RAN control architectures and AI-powered smart algorithms for O-RAN and NPN deployments.
Several of these innovative PoCs will be showcased at the CTTC booth at MWC, offering a first-hand look at cutting-edge 6G advancements.
