Pedro Espín holds a Ph.D. in Electronics, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from the University of Pavia, Italy (2020) and a Master Degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Technical University of Cartagena, Spain (2015). His PhD research activities are focused on the investigation of ground-based radars for snowpack monitoring. In the master thesis, he designed and fabricated novel microwave circuits and antennas, proposing new techniques for designing leaky-wave antennas. Since October 2019, he is part of the GEON Department in the Geomatics Division of CTTC as Research Assistant. He participated to the technology transfer of the CTTC spin-off: Geokinesia.
As a researcher he is participating actively on the improvement of microwave sensors, mostly focused on snow monitoring. This line is directly related with the GEON department research line “Sensor orientation, calibration and positioning” and with the RSE department research line “Remote sensing techniques”. He is also participating in the RAR and Active Reflectors research lines. All these lines are part of the strategic plan of the CTTC. His main research interests are the geophysical applications of microwave sensors, focusing in the development of new techniques for ground-based radars and GNSS receivers for snowpack monitoring. Novel techniques in the design and fabrication of microwave components are also part of his research area.
During his research career he has contributed (under the frame of the SNOWAVE project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Scientific Research) with: (i) The proposal and validation of a new architectures for snowpack monitoring sensors, pushing the boundaries of actual microwave radar sensors for estimating snow parameters. (ii) The design and fabrication of wide-band antennas for snowpack monitoring using novel 3D-printing techniques and materials. (iii) The creation of a snow parameters dataset (Snow height and Snow Water Equivalent) obtained through a novel snowpack monitoring sensor in several field campaigns from the Italian Alps and the Arctic Finnish Lapland. He participated in the ArcticWave project funded by INTERACT TA/RA for testing a microwave snow sensor in the Arctic Finnish Lapland.
He has authored or co-authored 6 scientific articles in international indexed journals concerning the previous topics. He has also 14 participations in international and national workshops and conferences. Moreover, he chaired and co-chaired different sessions in relevant conferences for his field like EuCAP.
